No, there is no pre-entrance exam requirement. We have found that success in the program is predicated on motivation and prior background. Although our program does not require a pre-entrance exam, the University requires international students to take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). The graduate college requires a minimum of total score of 550 on paper-based tests or 213 on computer-based tests.
The program takes an average of two years to complete with 33 semester hours. This includes the thesis or applied project.
There is a thesis or applied project requirement. The thesis is nine semester hours and the applied project is six semester hours. They are basically the same thing except the thesis format is controlled by the ASU Graduate College and the applied project format is controlled by the ETM department.
Not for classes, but the Web program is cohort based and requires attendance for three days in January at the beginning of the program for orientation and networking, and three days the following January for hands-on experiences and to discuss thesis or applied project options. In addition to the January meetings, there will be another attendance requirement for two days at the end of your 23-month program to defend your thesis or applied project. Attending the graduation ceremony is optional.
Yes, you are free to drop in on any of the face-to-face classes and participate.
Many classes are offered both online and face-to-face. The Web-based degree program consists of internet classes. There is an additional fee for participation in internet classes but many face to face students opt to pay this fee in order to save travel expenses between work, home and the university.
There is a requirement of a minimum of one semester organic chemistry and one semester of inorganic chemistry. There is a summer online organic chemistry class offered through the program that meets the organic chemistry requirement. An organic lab is NOT required.
Yes, all the classes needed to graduate from the program will be offered online, but there are some classes in the program, such as some electives, that are only offered face-to-face.
Yes, you are free choose the classes that fit your schedule, but you must pay an additional fee if the class is also offered face-to-face.
The professors are always available and willing to answer questions via phone and e-mail. Each online class will have a discussion board on the Blackboard system where students post their questions and comments. The professor then answers back or students can even communicate with each other.
Class will be accessed through a program called Blackboard. All of the class materials, excluding required texts, can be accessed through this Web site. The class lectures will be broadcasted on the Web site with access for you to view whenever it fits your schedule. Tests and assignments will be collected through a digital drop box, fax or via snail mail. Depending on the class, the tests might be timed or you might have a week to complete it.
You can transfer into your program of study (POS) up to nine semester hours if they are applicable.
