Fluid Dynamics and Wind Tunnel Testing

Students have access to a variety of fluid dynamics equipment. The laboratory includes a hydraulic pipe rack and pump system that includes a variety of pipe sizes and types, with an array of valves and fixtures. The rack is instrumented so that pressure losses can be measured by students for a number of different flow situations.

Aeronautical students have access to two wind tunnels. The larger tunnel has been primarily built by students over the last five years and its instrumentation is currently being upgraded—again with the students doing the work as a learning opportunity. The smaller tunnel began its life as a heat transfer experimentation tunnel and has also seen modifications to expand its capabilities.
