Biotechnology

Biotechnology is a broad field that applies a wide range of techniques including molecular biology, genetic engineering and functional genome research to organisms to produce a product or process with a specific use. Specific processes and products may include renewable energy production, environmental remediation, and nutriceuticals and pharmaceuticals.

Students enrolled in the B.S. in Applied Biological Sciences have the opportunity to work in the Laboratory for Algae Research and Biotechnology (LARB). In addition to its research efforts, LARB is an educational outreach in microbe-based biotechnology.  Students get first-hand experience in the latest state-of-the-art molecular biology and biotechnology, preparing them for careers in the biotechnology industry.

Students may also work with Applied Sciences and Mathematics faculty associated with ASU’s Biodesign Institute in the application of plant biotechnology to express and produce human therapeutics and vaccines in transgenic plants.
