Applied Psychology Undergraduate Degrees

B.S. in Applied Psychology

The B.S. in Applied Psychology is a 120-semester-hour program that offers a traditional psychology core leading to graduate school preparation and/or to applications in human factors with emphasis on:

  • human-computer interaction
  • aviation
  • manufacturing
  • training

 

What You Can Do With This Degree

Although most careers in psychology require graduate training, there are some employment opportunities for B.S. students in applied settings. For example, there is a need for individuals who can deal with problems of usability of products and systems. In the field of aviation, applied psychologists are needed to help design cockpits so that pilots are able to read the instruments and use the controls efficiently.

Graduates of the program also have been employed in careers as:

PGS 304 Effective Thinking

  • Description: Understanding and improving intellectual and behavioral skills; information analysis, inference, logic, problem solving, and decision making.

PGS 350 Social Psychology

  • Description: Human social behavior, including such concepts as aggression, attraction, attribution, conformity, groups, helping, person perception, and persuasion.

PGS 471 Psychological Testing

  • Description: Methods and theory of psychological testing; various types of psychological tests; consideration of ethical, social, and legal aspects of testing.

PSY 320 Learning and Motivation

  • Description: Principles of conditioning and motivation; approaches to learning, including acquisition of verbal materials, concepts, and motor skills; memory and transfer.

PSY 323 Sensation and Perception

  • Description: Underlying processes of vision, audition, and the other senses. Applies current research and theory in a lab environment.

PSY 324 Memory and Cognition

  • Description: Processes underlying information storage and retrieval, including different kinds of memory, forgetting, depth of processing, and control processes.

PSY 325 Physiological Psychology

  • Description: Relationships of physiological processes to behavior. Emphasizes nervous system functioning.

PSY 330 Statistical Methods

  • Description: Advanced application of statistics to psychology. Highly recommended for students interested in attending graduate school.

PSY 360 Cognitive Science

  • Description: Examines cognition from the varied perspectives of philosophy, linguistics, psychology, computer science (artificial intelligence), and neuroscience.

PSY 390 Experimental Psychology

  • Description: Continuation of concepts in PSY 290, with emphasis on multifactor designs and programmatic sequence of experiments.

PSY 437 Human Factors

  • Description: Emphasizes human factors in high-technology systems. Specific topics include systems development, systems analysis techniques, displays, and controls.

PSY 438 Human-Computer Interaction

  • Description: Theories, methods, and findings concerning the usability of computer systems and the design of effective user interfaces.

PSY 439 Training and Skill Acquisition

  • Description: Theories, methods, and findings concerning the acquisition of skilled performance and the design of effective training systems.

PSY 440 Industrial/Organizational Psychology

  • Description: Examines personnel selection, performance assessment, job and workplace design, job satisfaction, organizational behavior, management systems, and industrial safety.

PSY 448 Human Factors in Transportation

  • Description: Examines human performance and human-machine design issues in aviation and ground transportation.

PSY 449 Human Factors in Sports

  • Description: Examines how psychological principles can be applied to enhance the performance of athletes and coaches.

HON 493 Honors Thesis

  • Description: Applied psychology from a systems perspective. Requires a report based on research and/or applied work as a culminating experience.
